Exercise #2: Write three different premises--three potential stories you could write. Consider the elements that you value in the stories you referenced for the first exercise, and use them to write premises for original stories that have great meaning for you. For example, if Night moves you because of Elie Wiesel's concern for and care of his father and others in the death camps of the Holocaust while fighting to survive himself, then you might create a premise where your protagonist is imprisoned or trapped somewhere unjustly (you imagine the setting/situation), faces horrible atrocities, struggles against becoming bitter and self-serving, and emerges on the other side with a great deal more insight into himself and the human condition as a whole. Question: Is he going to emerge as one who values that which is good in people, or does he lose his battle against bitterness and dwell only on the evil that he has experienced? First Crocus
This morning, flowers cracked open
the earth’s brown shell. Spring
leaves spilled everywhere
though winter’s stern hand
could come down again at any moment
to break the delicate yolk
of a new bloom.
The crocus don’t see this as they chatter
beneath a cheerful petal of spring sky.
They ignore the air’s brisk arm
as they peer at their fresh stems, step
on the leftover fragments
of old leaves.
When the night wind twists them to pieces,
they will die like this: laughing,
tossing their brilliant heads
in the bitter air.
